Privacy Policy
We keep this simple. Here is exactly what data we collect, why, and what you can do about it.
This is a working draft written for clarity. Before public launch, and especially before accounts or payments go live, Whamr should have this policy reviewed by a data protection professional to make sure it meets the rules that apply in the regions Whamr serves.
1 Who We Are
Whamr operates this meme and sticker platform. We are responsible for the personal data processed through the Service. For privacy questions, reach us through the contact details on the site.
2 What We Collect Today
You can use most of Whamr without an account. What we handle depends on whether you have one.
2.1 On-device data
Your saved favourites, your display preferences and the items you have picked for a sticker pack are stored in your own browser. Signed out, they stay on your device and are not linked to any identity we hold.
2.2 Activity on items
We record when an item is viewed, shared or downloaded, along with the country the request came from. A view is counted once per item per browsing session. This tells us which memes people actually use, which is how the library is ranked and what gets added to it. It is recorded against the item, not against you, and it does not require an account.
2.3 Sharing actions
When you share a meme, the share happens directly between your device and the messaging app you choose. We record that a share happened and which app you chose. We do not see who you sent it to or what you said.
2.4 If you create an account
We store your email address, your handle and display name, and a hashed version of your password. We keep a record of active sessions, which includes the IP address and browser they were started from, so you can be signed out of a device you no longer have. Anything you then do under that account, meaning uploads, comments, likes, collections and contributions, is stored and attributed to it.
2.5 If you send us a copyright notice
A takedown notice or counter-notice requires your name, address and contact details, because the law requires them. If a counter-notice is filed against your notice, we pass your notice on, including those details. That is also required, and the copyright page says so before you submit.
3 What We Do Not Do
- We do not sell your data to anyone.
- We do not collect your precise location. Country is as fine as it gets.
- We do not require your real name to use the Service.
- We do not read or store the messages you send memes in. The share hands the file to your messaging app and stops there.
- We do not build advertising profiles ourselves. Whamr carries advertising, and what that involves is set out below rather than buried.
4 Third-Party Services
Whamr relies on a few providers to operate:
- Vercel hosts and serves the website.
- Cloudflare stores and delivers the meme and sticker media.
- Render and Neon run the application server and the database, which is where accounts, comments and uploads are held.
- Google AdSense serves the advertising on this site. See the next section.
- Google Sign-In, if you choose it, tells us your email address, name and profile picture, and nothing else about your Google account.
- SendGrid delivers email we send you, such as address confirmation and password resets.
- OpenMoji provides some of the sticker artwork under an open licence.
These providers process data on our behalf to deliver the Service. Each has its own privacy practices, and Google’s advertising practices in particular are its own and not ours to set.
5 Cookies, Local Storage and Advertising
Whamr uses your browser’s local storage to remember things like your saved favourites and whether you have asked for lighter media. That stays on your device and we do not read it from our servers.
This site carries advertising, and advertising uses cookies. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit here and to other sites. You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google’s Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info.
Opting out stops advertising being personalised. It does not stop advertising, and it does not affect anything else on Whamr.
If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, your consent is required before advertising cookies are set. We are working through this and, until it is in place, treat the advertising on this site as not suitable for readers in those regions.
6 How Long We Keep Things
Your account and what you have posted under it are kept until you ask us to remove them. Activity records about items, meaning the views, shares and downloads described above, are kept as part of how the library is ranked.
Copyright notices are kept as a record of what was decided and why, because a takedown and a counter-notice are two halves of the same dispute and a decision has to be explainable afterwards.
Deleting an account does not withdraw a contribution that has already been accepted into the library, such as a correction to where a meme came from. The link to you is removed; the fact stays, because it is part of what the entry now knows.
7 Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal data, including the right to access it, correct it, or ask us to delete it. Since Whamr currently holds very little personal data, most of what relates to you (your saved favourites) lives on your own device and you can clear it any time through your browser.
To make a request about any data we do hold, contact us through the site.
8 Children’s Privacy
Whamr is not directed at young children. When accounts launch, there will be a minimum age to register, and we will not knowingly collect personal data from anyone below that age.
9 Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as Whamr grows. When we do, we will revise the “last updated” date above and, for significant changes, highlight them on the site.
