What belongs here

The short version

Whamr is for the reaction you send your friends. Post things people would want to receive. Do not post things that would harm the person in them.

What does not belong

• Anything sexual involving minors. This is reported to the authorities, not just removed, and the account ends. There is no appeal and no context that changes it.
• Sexual content generally. This is a library people open in a group chat and at work.
• Real violence, injury or death. Not as a reaction, not as a joke.
• Harassment of a specific person. A meme about a public moment is fine. A meme made to follow somebody around is not, and the difference is usually obvious to everyone including the person who made it.
• Attacks on people for what they are. Race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, disability, gender, sexuality. Nigerian humour is direct and often at somebody’s expense, and that is not the same as this.
• Somebody’s private moment, posted without them. Including private messages, and including anything that identifies where a person lives.
• Material you have no right to post. See fair use for where we stand on that, which is more honest than most sites manage.

What happens when something is reported

It comes off the site immediately. Not when a moderator gets to it. One report is enough, because a person who has seen something and objected is a better signal than any automatic check, and a few hours offline for something innocent costs less than the alternative.

Then a person looks. If the report was baseless the item goes straight back up, and nothing about it is held against whoever posted it.

If it was well founded, the item stays down and whoever posted it is told what happened and why, in words rather than a code.

If your upload is removed

You can appeal, and a different look is the whole point of the appeal. If it is refused, the refusal has to be written out, and those words are what you receive. Nothing is deleted while an appeal is open.

Accounts that attract repeated valid copyright notices are ended. That is a legal requirement rather than a policy choice, and it counts valid notices, not accusations.

Contributing to the library

Tags are open to anyone signed in, and they appear straight away. Most of this library was tagged by a machine that did not know what it was looking at, and the only people who can fix that are the ones using it. Every community tag records who added it, so a bad batch can be undone without touching anything else.

Saying where a meme came from goes to a moderator first. A tag is cheap and reversible; a claim about a fact ends up in the page’s own description, and one confident wrong answer is worse than an empty field. A link to something that backs it up makes acceptance far more likely.

Do not add tags to make something rank. It makes the library worse for everybody, it is obvious, and it is trivially reversed.

Reporting something

Use the report control on the item itself. That is faster than telling anybody, because it hides the item at once and puts it in front of a moderator in the same action.

For copyright specifically, use the copyright page, which asks for what the law requires and gives you a reference to follow it with.
