If something here is yours

Report it and it comes down. This page explains the process, what a notice has to contain, and how to answer one.

Almost everything in this library came from somewhere. Memes circulate, and the line between a format and a work is not always clean. If something here is yours and you want it gone, the form below is the fastest route, and it goes to a person.

You do not need an account. You do not need a lawyer to fill it in. What you do need is to be the rights holder or authorised to act for them, because the last two boxes are sworn statements.

What happens after you send it

  1. We read it. Notices are reviewed in the order they arrive.
  2. If the URLs point at something here, it comes down. The material is removed and the person who posted it is told what happened and why.
  3. They can answer. Anyone whose material is removed can file a counter-notice saying it was a mistake. If they do, you are sent a copy.
  4. If nobody goes to court, it goes back up. Typically after 10 to 14 business days, which is what the statute provides for.

You will get a reference when you submit. Keep it: it is how you check the status, and how a counter-notice is matched back to your claim.

Send a takedown notice

Every field marked required is required by law, not by us. A notice missing one of them is not a valid notice, and we would have to come back and ask.

If your material was removed

You can file a counter-notice. Do it only if you genuinely believe the removal was a mistake, or that you hold the rights: the statement is made under penalty of perjury, and it includes agreeing that a court can hear the dispute.

File a counter-notice

Some plain notes

  • A false notice has a cost. Under 17 U.S.C. 512(f), knowingly misrepresenting that material is infringing can make you liable for damages, including the other side’s legal costs.
  • Your notice is forwarded. If a counter-notice is filed we pass your notice, including your contact details, to the person who posted the material. The statute requires it.
  • Repeat infringers lose their accounts. Accounts that attract repeated valid notices are terminated.
  • This page is not legal advice. It describes what we do with a notice. If you are unsure whether you have a claim, ask someone qualified.
